Should I make my 14 year old daughter take a self defense course and carry pepper spray in her purse?

if you had a teenage daughter, would you give her pepper spray to carry in her purse?
or mace?
or would you just make her take a self defense course?

In most states it is illegal for a minor to carry mace/pepper spray. Not all states, but most. If I was genuinely concerned about my daughter, and believed her to be responsible with it, would I provide this to her as a last means of self-defense….Without question, yes. Bare in mind, you could potentially breaking the law providing it to her. If she gets caught at school with it, she and or you could be facing problems. Either you or her or both of you could face charges or at the very least, if it is in violation of school policy, and probably is, she will be looking at some type of school discipline.

Self defense class? Absolutley! Completely legal, everyone has the right to defend themself.

I would do both!!!!!! It’s better to be safe then sorry. So many young girl’s are being attacked these days so the more you can teach your daughter about self defence the better chance she will have SHOULD anything happen to her.

    Touch wood!

Yes , i think you should do the self defense course but the pepper spray can get her in trouble, remember she’s only 14.

make her take a self-defense course. gives her confidence and keeps her out of trouble. i guess the extra precaution with the pepper spray won’t hurt.

one can never be too careful.

My gym class had a mandatory self defense class for the guys and girls 2 yrs ago (I was 14) so I guess if the school was serious about, may be u should be also. It’s good to know in any case, the pepper spray can also come in handy, u never know who’s lurking around the corner

I’m a black belt in jujitsu so i am definitely going to teach it to her. I’d be a little worried with the pepper spray cause I’ve heard stories of girls just using it for fun and getting in big trouble for it, but i wouldnt have a problem with it either. Probably just the self defense.

I’m fifteen and a few months ago my mom told me i had to take this one self defense course. and i was so mad and did noottt want to take it because i thought i could defend myself well enough.
Then, I took the course, and afterward I felt so confident about myself and now i know i really could do something about a horrible situation.

So, yes, you should have her take a class, but with that the pepper spray/mace will be unneccesary.

Better yet, take the course with her! So you can "practice"! And the upside of taking those courses is that they make you more aware to a bad situation before you have to use the physical tactics that they teach. Many times you can avoid a problem IF you pay attention to the early warning signs.

Pepper spray or mace still require some training to be able to use it properly and effectively. And if it’s in her purse, it’s probably in the bottom and she really can’t tell an attacker "Hold on a minute till I find my pepper spray!".

Education is key in the area of personal defense. Both of you will learn a lot! Make it a special thing, go to dinner either before or after class or even just for ice cream.

And since you’re taking the course also, it’s much easier to insist that she attend. She’ll most likely pitch a fit and all that but don’t cave in. I hope she never has to use anything she might learn but if she uses it just once and escapes a problem safely, it will be well worth the effort and expense!

    Neither. The society and culture around her is supposed to protect her. Giving up on that concept means we are doomed as a nation. It would also give her a false sense of security. If a child is taught they have to protect themselves at 14 we are transmitting a message of defeat. Pepper spray has no effect on people super high on drugs. A child is protected by their father and mother and extended family. Teachers are legally ‘in loco parentis" and if your neighbors and if the police and the courts do their job the question would be moot. You will be sending a very wrong message and it could easily backfire. 8>}

YES! I would definitely do both! And to answer your other question, Mace is a brand of pepper spray, so you can really get either. There are also several different companies who make pepper sprays such as Wildfire and Pepper Shot.

If you are looking for a good website that has a big variety that you can look at try http://www.self-defensestore.com/pepperspray.html. I also found demonstration videos which are really funny on that site as well… http://www.self-defensestore.com/productdemonstrationvideos.html
